Toyota has significantly improved the value and appeal of its Tarago range by adding in-demand features and upgrading interiors while lowering prices.

Satellite navigation is now standard across the range, being rolled down to the volume-selling GLi and GLX four-cylinder and V6 variants at the same time as recommended retail prices for these variants have been reduced by $1,500.

Range-topping Tarago Ultima V6, which falls in price by $1716, joins all grades in receiving new safety features - a reversing camera and an emergency brake signal that flashes the hazard lights during heavy stopping.

The four-cylinder Tarago range now starts from $45,490* - a price that has not been seen since the 1990s. Prices for V6 grades - first introduced in 2007 - have never been lower, now starting at $50,490*. The latest reductions follow price cuts early last year flowing from the free-trade agreement with Japan.


Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the latest updates would expand upon the compelling reasons for Tarago to be purchased by people whose needs have outgrown other vehicles.

"Families and business owners will appreciate that Tarago's renowned space, comfort and quality have been enhanced by a more upscale interior and even better value due to expanded levels of equipment and sharper pricing," Mr Cramb said. Toyota Tarago Updated Features & Price

All Tarago interiors have been upgraded with a black soft-touch dashboard, piano-black treatments for the centre cluster and air vents, and improved heater/air-conditioning controls with easier-to-use electrostatic switches.

The Optitron instruments have been redesigned to incorporate a colour 4.2-inch multi-information display (MID) alongside a semi-circular speedometer and a horizontal tachometer. New three-spoke steering wheels include MID controls.

Reversing camera and 3-D satellite navigation images are displayed on a 6.1-inch touch-screen display that is also used to operate the audio system. Bluetooth®# hands-free and audio-streaming functions, voice recognition, SUNA live-traffic updates, USB input, single CD player and AM/FM bands with FM radio text are all standard.

V6 GLX and Ultima grades are newly fitted with premium seats that feature luxurious quilted suede-like black fabric flanked by synthetic leather. Two-step front seat heaters are new to V6 GLX. All other grades are equipped with grey cloth seats.

Ultima, and now V6 GLX, have auto-levelling high-intensity discharge headlamps with an adaptive front lighting system that enables them to swivel on low beam to provide better illumination when turning corners.

Tarago engines are now certified to the higher Euro 5 emissions standard with no change to fuel consumption while the electric power-steering system has been improved with a revised intermediate shaft that provides a more direct on-centre feel.

Tarago's 202kW 3.5-litre V6 is matched with a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with artificial intelligence and a sequential-style manual gear select shift. The 125kW 2.4-litre four-cylinder with a continuously variable automatic transmission uses just 8.9 litres to travel 100km**. V6 fuel economy is 10.2 litres/100km** for GLi and 10.3 litres/100km** for GLX and Ultima.

Standard safety equipment includes seven airbags, vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. All models have cruise control, hill-start assist, tilt-and-telescopic steering column adjustment, front and rear heater/air-conditioning, rear spoiler and remote central locking. Two front corner and four rear parking sensors are standard on GLX and Ultima.

The two top V6 variants are equipped with power sliding rear doors and keyless "smart entry" with sensors on the front and luggage-door handles, while all grades have push-button "smart start" ignition.Toyota Tarago front interior

Tarago Ultima retains its rear-seat entertainment system for Blu-Ray or DVD viewing on a nine-inch screen located above the front seats. There are three wireless headphones and a remote control. Ultima also has a dual moonroof with sunshade.

GLi and four-cylinder GLX models offer eight seats, including a three-passenger second-row seat with 60/40 split. V6 GLX and Ultima grades have seven seats, including two adjustable captain's chairs with integrated ottomans in the second row and a sliding centre console.

Three-person third-row seats are split 60:40 and can be folded forward to increase cargo space. In V6 models, they can be stowed with a flat luggage floor and are electrically operated in Ultima. 

GLi models run on 16-inch steel wheels while the other grades are fitted with 17-inch alloys - 10-spoke for GLX and 15-spoke for Ultima.

Tarago is covered by the capped-price Toyota Service Advantage at a maximum of $180 per service for the first six standard scheduled services##.

Tarago - a favourite for more than 30 years
Tarago - with local sales of more than 102,000 vehicles - has played an integral part in the development and appeal of people-movers in this country. 

Credited with popularising the concept of modern people-movers, it is the only vehicle of its type to pass 100,000 sales in Australia.

First-generation Tarago established the concept of modern people-movers in the mass market. In 1986, it became the first people-mover to undergo a crash test in Australia.

The second generation, launched in 1990, broke new ground. It was the first vehicle of its type to offer a chassis not shared even in part with a commercial vehicle, offering increased crash protection and a major step forward in handling and ride.

The switch from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive, with the release of third generation Tarago in 2000, allowed for design improvements in space, accessibility and aerodynamics.

Tarago continued to evolve with the fourth generation in 2006, introducing a new level of style, package efficiency, performance, fuel economy and low emissions. The first V6 Tarago was launched in 2007.

A Toyota HiLux SR extra cab is on duty as official chase car, supporting intrepid Russian adventurer Fedor Konyukhov as he crosses Australia at the start of his bid to set a new world record for a non-stop solo hot-air balloon flight around the globe.

Northam, a world-recognised hub for ballooning around 50km north-east of Perth, was the launching point for Konyukhov's Around-the-World-On-A-Rozière-Balloon expedition.

The HiLux chase vehicle has already performed a critical role in support of this unique journey, transporting the gondola carrying gas burners and tanks for pre-launch tests and delivering equipment arriving from various countries.

The Russian started his round-the-world air balloon flight on July 12 and, despite low wind speed, the Toyota protected the balloon from premature lift-off courtesy of a direct wire-rope connection.


While preparing for the 'round-the-world flight, the Toyota HiLux was transformed into a full-on travelling base for testing the equipment installed on the world's largest balloon, made especially for Konyukhov's record attempt.

Its generous load capacity allowed the HiLux to transport the gondola with burners on the roof in its trailer simultaneously with gas tanks for bed tests to the airfield.Hilux Supports Around the World Russian adventurer Fedor Konyukhov

When free from testing, the Toyota HiLux delivered additional equipment that arrived continuously at the expedition camp from supply partners around the world.

A 48 to 72-hour flight across Australia - the first stage of the around-the-world journey - is even more difficult due to the heavy air traffic over the continent.

In case of an unexpected change in the wind direction or speed, Konyukhov will have to make quick decisions on flight direction and level in order to stay away from major air routes.

The Toyota HiLux's unparalleled off-road performance will be critical for the land support team if they have to change the route on-the-fly, or follow the balloon over rough terrain.

The Morton air balloon, equipped with a navigation system and an autopilot, will fly over New Zealand, the Pacific Ocean, South America, the Atlantic Ocean, the southernmost tip of Africa and the Indian Ocean before returning to the west coast of Australia.

During the journey, the gondola with the famous Russian traveller on board will cover 33,000km at a height of five to 10 kilometres.

Considering the speed and enormous height of the flight, no one can predict exactly what distance the HiLux will have to cover off-road to carry out its mission.

The flight around the globe will be a true challenge for Konyukhov and all equipment used in the expedition.

The pilot will spend two weeks in the enclosed space of the gondola where the mercury will not budge above four degrees compared with an ambient temperature as low as minus 60C.

Konyukhov will wear an oxygen mask and eat freeze-dried rations for the entire flight. Restrictions on the airborne weight are so severe that even water supply is limited to 50 litres.

Safety requirements preclude open flame inside the gondola, meaning the only heat source will be warm water heated on an electric cooker.

June 2015 - Toyota and Fedor Konyukhov's expedition crew signed the partnership agreement. The iconic Toyota HiLux became the official vehicle of the unique Russian solo traveller's new project - Around-The-World-On-A-Rozière-Balloon.

Unrivalled off-road performance, excellent capacity and legendary reliability determined the choice of the official expedition vehicle, and the tasks for the Toyota HiLux included:

• transporting the basket and the balloon to the launch site
• following the hot-air balloon with the land support team on roads of any type of surface and soil
• helping collect used gas tanks during runs of many kilometres, and
• meeting the pilots at the landing place, providing transfer from the launch site and to the camp after landing.

June 2015 - January 2016 - The Toyota HiLux was actively involved in the drills of Konyukhov's team in Russia.

January 24, 2016 - Fedor Konyukhov and Ivan Menyaylo set the new world record for the longest hot-air balloon non-stop flight. The HiLux delivered the hot-air balloon and its crew to the launch site, followed the balloonists all the way during the flight, helped collect used gas tanks in the most remote places, and met the travellers at the landing spot.

April 2016 - The Toyota HiLux participated in the official handover ceremony of a new Cameron Balloons air balloon in Bristol, UK. It is the world's largest Rozière balloon, an aerostat that gains its lift through the use of two chambers filled with gas with specific weight lower than air, and hot air.

June 2016 - The main preparatory stage is completed exactly a year after the partnership has begun: Fedor Konyukhov and his team arrived in Australia.

July 12, 2016 - Start of the around-the-world flight.

July 2016 - The land support team headed by Oskar Konyukhov will follow Konyukhov's air balloon across Australia in order to assist if an unforeseen situation arises, including an emergency landing.

** Renews call for abolition of "inequitable" Luxury Car Tax **

Thousands of Toyota customers stand to benefit from lower new-vehicle prices as the carmaker has passed on the full benefits of a higher Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold.

Toyota's recommended retail prices have fallen by $284 for the entire LandCruiser 200 series range, four LandCruiser Prado variants, AWD Kluger Grande and Tarago Ultima V6. The 2WD Kluger Grande is now priced below the threshold, resulting in a $267 reduction.


Announcing Toyota's move, which took effect on Friday, the company's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb renewed calls for the abolition of the tax, describing it as an unfair impost on motorists and the automotive industry.

"This is an inequitable tax because it applies only to vehicles and not to other high-end goods such as luxury boats, jewellery and watches," Mr Cramb said.

"It is unfair that such a discriminatory tax hits consumers who are already contributing significantly to government coffers through GST, stamp duty and registration fees when buying a new car, as well as hefty taxes on fuel," he said.

"Last year, more than 13,500 new Toyota owners were hit by this inefficient, punitive and poorly designed measure."

The LCT threshold rose from July 1 by $948 to $64,132 in line with inflation, while the rate for fuel-efficient cars that use no more than seven litres of fuel per 100km rose for the first time in six years by $151 to $75,526.

FJ Cruiser Rides Into the Sun

Toyota is set to bid a fond farewell to the FJ Cruiser, a retro-inspired rugged off-roader that became an instant classic when it was launched in Australia in 2011.

The FJ Cruiser will end its production run in August with Australians having bought more than 11,000 vehicles at an average of 180 a month - a considerably higher rate than originally expected.

Drawing its rugged DNA, inspiration and design cues from Toyota's famed FJ40, the FJ Cruiser was developed as a basic, capable and affordable vehicle aimed specifically at serious off-roaders looking to push the limits.

Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the FJ Cruiser built on more than half a century of Toyota tradition in producing tough off-road vehicles.

"The FJ rides into the sunset as a vehicle renowned for its ability to traverse rugged outback trails while offering plenty of utility for all types of activities and being equally well-suited for everyday driving," Mr Cramb said.

"It will leave lasting memories as one of the most iconic vehicles in Toyota's rich SUV history, helping to bring renewed energy to the Toyota brand," he said.  


The thoroughly modern FJ Cruiser updated the classic FJ40 theme in a contemporary way. The front grille with two round headlights recalls the FJ40's frontal styling. Other heritage design cues include the bonnet and wheel-arch contours and a rear-mounted and exposed full-size spare tyre.

The FJ Cruiser design offers plenty of functionality. Side access doors open 90 degrees in clamshell fashion for easy access to and from the rear seats. A swing-up glass hatch is incorporated into the side-hinged tailgate, opening independently and also useful for accommodating longer items.

The FJ Cruiser capped off its first year on sale in Australia by winning 4x4 Australia magazine's 4x4 of the Year title. Judges said the FJ Cruiser proved to be the "real deal" with its "well-proven and robust mechanicals".

It is powered by a 200kW, 380Nm 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine with five-speed automatic transmission, part-time 4x4, an electrically activated rear differential lock and switchable Active Traction Control technology to maximise off-road climbing ability.

FJ Cruiser has the best approach and departure angles in the Toyota 4WD range - 36 and 31 degrees respectively.

Local testing resulted in unique calibration of the heavy-duty all-coil suspension and power steering to suit Australian conditions, plus the fitment of 17-inch alloy wheels and 70-profile tyres.

Australia's course-chip road surfaces prompted improvements to FJ Cruiser's NVH that were adopted globally.

Safety features include six airbags, vehicle stability control, anti-skid brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, active front-seat head restraints and a reversing camera with the display located in the electro-chromatic rear-view mirror. 

Other features include rear parking sensors, rear fog lamps, privacy glass, cruise control, air-conditioning, a premium steering wheel with audio controls, multi-information display, eight-speaker audio system with a CD stacker and central locking.

Satellite navigation became standard in early 2012. An upgrade in March 2013 boosted the FJ Cruiser's "go anywhere, do anything" appeal by more than doubling its fuel range and adding an off-road cruise-control system, CRAWL.

Fuel capacity was expanded to 159 litres with the main 72-litre tank supplemented by an 87-litre sub-tank, providing a notional driving range of almost 1,400km*.

CRAWL is a "feet off" system that controls engine output and brake pressure to maintain low uniform speeds over severe or slippery terrain, allowing the driver to concentrate fully on steering.

Later in 2013, FJ gained newly designed seven-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels.

During its time in Australia, FJ Cruiser has been offered in a total of 13 colours including bright hues to reflect energy and vitality as well as solid, tool-like tones to highlight the vehicle's tough image and terrain-conquering ability.

The final exterior colour palette is French Vanilla, Sandstorm, Ebony, Hornet Yellow, Red Fury, Retro Blue and Cement.

Offered in a single grade with a high level of specification, the FJ Cruiser is priced from $46,990**. Metallic paint (Cement) is $550 extra.

FJ Cruiser is covered by Toyota Service Advantage capped-price servicing at a maximum of $220 per service#.

The Pedigree

The FJ40 LandCruiser became an icon among Toyota's vehicles, generating widespread recognition and respect for its authentic off-road capabilities.

More than 1.1 million were produced between 1960 and 1984; however, Toyota's enthusiasm never waned for the spirit of this rugged, go-anywhere vehicle.

In the late 1990s, Toyota in the United States encouraged design projects that ultimately led to the development of a new FJ - a modern vehicle that would appeal to younger drivers, even those who knew nothing about the original FJ.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Unveils TS050 Hybrid


Toyota Gazoo Racing has unveiled its new 2016 World Endurance Championship (WEC) contender, the TS050 HYBRID, prior to the official 'Prologue' pre-season test at Circuit Paul Ricard, near Marseille in southern France.

The all-new car, Toyota's third since joining the WEC in 2012, features a 2.4-litre twin-turbo direct-injection V6 petrol engine combined with a high-capacity 8MJ hybrid system.

Developed by Toyota's Motor Sport Unit Development Division at the company's Higashi-Fuji Technical Centre in Susono, Japan, the new generation turbo engine with direct injection is better suited to the current WEC regulations which limit fuel flow to the engine.

The new powertrain also provides the opportunity to continue technology and knowledge transfer from the track to Toyota road cars.

As in Toyota Hybrid road cars, the (front and rear) motor-generators recover energy under braking, storing it in a high-powered lithium-ion battery and releasing it as a maximum efficiency performance boost.

The change from super capacitor to battery storage allows the TS050 HYBRID to move up to the more-powerful 8MJ hybrid class. 



A new powertrain concept brings different cooling and packaging demands, including an updated transmission to handle the significant increase in torque delivered by the turbo engine.

Combined with a new aerodynamic concept, virtually every part on the TS050 HYBRID chassis has been redesigned by TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH (TMG) in Cologne, Germany.

Powertrain components have also played a part in the improved aerodynamic performance of the TS050 HYBRID. By relocating the front motor-generator unit, better under-floor air flow has been achieved and suspension kinematics have also been revised to optimise tyre wear.

The team has already covered more than 22,000km in testing of the TS050 HYBRID, striving for performance and reliability, with positive results.

Toyota Gazoo Racing will field two TS050 HYBRIDs for the nine-race 2016 WEC season, kicking off at Silverstone in the UK on 17 April.

In the #5 car 2014 WEC champions Anthony Davidson and Sébastien Buemi again form a potent partnership with Le Mans pole position winner Kazuki Nakajima. 

In the #6 car multiple Le Mans pole position winner Stéphane Sarrazin once again links up with fellow WEC race winner Mike Conway. They are joined by Formula 1 podium finisher Kamui Kobayashi (promoted from test and reserve driver).

About TOYOTA GAZOO Racing in the World Endurance Championship:
Toyota first competed in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 1983, marking the start of a long period of participation in endurance racing.

Since 1985, Toyota cars have raced in 17 Le Mans 24 Hours races, achieving a best result of second place on four occasions (1992, 1994, 1999 and 2013).

Toyota entered the revived WEC in 2012, combining the expertise from Toyota Higashi-Fuji Technical Centre, where the hybrid powertrain is developed, with Toyota Motorsport GmbH's support and facilities for chassis development.

The multinational team is based in Cologne, Germany and includes engineers from Toyota's motorsport and hybrid department, who deliver technology and know-how back into road car development.

Since 2012, Toyota has earned nine pole positions and won eight races, finishing on the podium a total of 23 times.

In 2014, the team won the drivers' and manufacturers' World Championships with the TS040 HYBRID while a year later Toyota celebrated 30 years since its first Le Mans entry.

Toyota Motorsport GmbH combines its role in the WEC project with its other activities, such as the supply of a World Rally Championship engine for Toyota's return to the category in 2017, as well as its engineering services business and customer motorsport activities.

Updated Toyota 86 Unveiled at NY Show


An updated version of Australia's best-selling sports car, the Toyota 86, will be unveiled at this year's New York International Auto Show, running from March 25 to April 3.

Featuring revised exterior and interior design, as well as suspension and powertrain upgrades, the MY17 86 is scheduled to go on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of this year.

More aggressive styling is focused on a larger grille, emphasising the car's low, wide stance.

Re-configured LED headlamps incorporate new indicators, sitting above redesigned fog lamp bezels and a revised bumper. At the rear, there are sports LED tail lamps and a new bumper.

The alloy wheel design has been refreshed, and the 86 logo has shifted to a stand-alone badge on the front fender, as well as inside the front headlamps.

On the inside, the high-grade GTS features a new, soft-feel 'Grandlux' material (reprising the 86 logo) on the instrument panel surround and door trims.

GTS drivers will also enjoy new seating material with silver stitching, as well as a steering wheel with integrated audio controls.

Under the skin, a revised suspension tune focuses on shock absorber and spring rates, while on manual variants additional performance comes from a gear ratio change as well as increases* to torque (+9Nm) and peak power (+4kW), with Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)#helping prevent the car from rolling back on steep hills.

Toyota executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said since launching here in mid-2012, the front-engine, rear-wheel drive 86 has captured the imagination of local car enthusiasts.

Toyota Announces Turbo SUV for Australia


Toyota Australia is set to enter the fastest-growing segment of the local market with the daringly styled C-HR compact crossover vehicle.

The company's newest SUV is slated for an early 2017 arrival in local dealerships after a much-anticipated world premiere of the production model at this year's Geneva motor show.

Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the eye-catching C-HR will be the company's first entrant in the highly competitive small SUV category, which has almost tripled in size during the past four years.

"C-HR will expand Toyota's market appeal with its stunning design and superb driving performance - with powerful low-end torque and outstanding handling and agility - all while delivering impressive fuel economy," Mr Cramb said.

An all-new platform, developed as part of Toyota's New Generation Architecture philosophy, delivers sharp driving dynamics supported by a highly rigid body structure and low centre of gravity.

A new-generation 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo-charged petrol engine fitted to Australian variants generates impressive acceleration and responsiveness.

The 85kW four-cylinder direct-injection engine is characterised by abundant torque at low engine and vehicle speeds, achieving its peak of 185Nm at just 1,500rpm and maintaining it all the way to 4,000rpm*.

Strong low-end torque enables the driver to achieve intended dynamic performance at the same time as Toyota's latest combustion and other engine technologies ensure excellent fuel efficiency.


Locally, the five-door C-HR will be available in 2WD and AWD configurations with six-speed manual and continuously variable automatic transmissions.

The C-HR will be well equipped with advanced safety specification including standard autonomous braking and reversing camera.
Marginally longer and wider than a Corolla hatch, the C-HR employs the higher ride height of an SUV and benefits from a longer wheelbase.


Extroverted styling for the new model keeps faith with the widely praised designs of two concept studies that signalled a more emotional styling direction for the world's leading carmaker.

The first Toyota C-HR concept in three-door guise was shown at the 2014 Paris motor show while a five-door concept debuted at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show.

Local sales of small SUVs have achieved compound annual growth of almost 30 per cent since 2011 - from fewer than 40,000 units to last year's tally of more than 110,000 vehicles.

Last year alone, the category surged ahead by 24,000 sales, posting the biggest volume and percentage growth for any sector of the local market.

Toyota sells more SUVs in Australia than any other brand and last year set a new local record by selling 59,412 of these popular vehicles, often purchased as alternatives to passenger cars. 

The market leader's SUV tally was 44.3 per cent higher than its nearest competitor, which translates to a margin of more than 18,000 vehicles. Toyota is the only brand to exceed 50,000 SUV sales in a year.

Two of Toyota's vehicles - RAV4 and Kluger - achieved their best-ever sales results while LandCruiser Prado was the country's best-selling large SUV.

Toyota's new-generation HiLux SR5 has been officially named the country's best dual cab 4x4 in the prestigious Australia's Best Cars awards, judged by the nation's motoring clubs.
Judges said the new HiLux is smarter, more economical and tougher - building on its renowned "unbreakable" reputation with a stronger chassis and beefed-up suspension.

They said its modern drivetrain is particularly smooth and quiet with a new 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine delivering "the double punch of better performance and lower fuel consumption".

"Off-road ability has also been improved, with 20 per more wheel articulation, bigger dampers and larger disc brakes, along with greater under-body protection," judges said.

"These improvements were noted on our off-road testing - HiLux had greater clearance and articulation than the rest of our finalists."

Judges said the HiLux cabin stood out from the competition being more modern and quieter, while the finish and quality of materials provide a relatively high-class ambience for a working vehicle.



Its features include a seven-inch touch-screen multimedia system, satellite navigation*, Bluetooth®# and iPod™^ connectivity, and modern convenience features such as climate-control air-conditioning and keyless entry and ignition.

"The addition of tilt-and-reach-adjustable steering - a rarity in this category - allows the driver to find a comfortable position and gives HiLux a more car-like feel."

HiLux has a five-star ANCAP safety rating with features including a reversing camera, electronic stability control and seven airbags, including a driver knee airbag.

Toyota Brings Hybrid Performance to Corolla

Toyota will bring the added appeal of hybrid technology to Australia's favourite car with the mid-year launch of a Corolla hybrid hatch.

The new hybrid car is expected to use around one-third less fuel* while producing similar power to the already efficient petrol-only Corolla hatch with its Multidrive S automatic transmission.

Corolla hybrid hatch will be introduced as a well-specified single grade, expanding the local company's Hybrid Synergy Drive offerings to a fifth model following Prius, Prius c, Prius v and Camry.

Premium features will include satellite navigation#, Toyota Link connected mobility^, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning and bi-LED headlamps.

Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the company's full hybrid technology is established as a mainstream powertrain choice.

"The combination of Toyota's hybrid technology and Australia's best-selling car gives us a unique opportunity to broaden the market appeal of both," Mr Cramb said. 

"Corolla hybrid hatch will offer all the advantages of Australia's favourite car, coupled with the hybrid system's established performance, reliability, durability and exceptionally low running costs.

"This addition to the Corolla range will be fun to drive - and fun to own with fuel economy and emissions that are superior to its direct competitors, especially diesel.


"There is enormous potential for the hybrid Corolla as shown by its success in western Europe where hybrid versions account for more than 50 per cent of all Auris (Corolla hatch) sales. In fact, it attracts more sales than any other hybrid in that market." 

Australia's best-selling hybrid vehicle is Camry with 5,881 sales last year, an increase of 11.2 per cent over the previous year.

The Corolla Hybrid hatch will be fitted with a Euro 5 compliant 73kW 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to a 60kW electric motor and driven through a continuously variable automatic transmission. 

Combined system output of 100kW is achieved with almost Prius-like fuel economy while generating low oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and virtually zero particulate matter emissions.

A selectable electric-vehicle mode will enable the Corolla hybrid hatch to be driven for up to two kilometres at speeds of up to around 45km/h with zero tailpipe emissions, depending on the level of battery charge and driving conditions.

Corolla, which is now in its 50th year in the Australian market, has been the best-selling car for each of the past three years with a 103kW petrol engine available in sedan and hatch body styles.

The Corolla nameplate is the most successful in Toyota's Australian range with more than 1.34 million sold to local customers.

RAV4 Completes Toyota's 2015 Renewal

Toyota has released a substantially upgraded RAV4 SUV, completing a remarkable 2015 in which it has launched, replaced or renewed models representing three-quarters of its sales volume.

The latest changes to RAV4 extend Toyota's revitalisation this year to 13 models with combined sales of at least 150,000 per year including its three most popular vehicles - Camry, HiLux and Corolla hatch.

RAV4 adopts sleeker and more dynamic exterior styling, refreshed interiors, Euro 5 engines, trailer sway control and new features including an available package of integrated active safety and driver assistance technologies.

The newly developed safety features use a forward-facing camera and millimetre-wave radar to trigger vehicle systems, including autonomous braking, to prevent or mitigate the force of a collision.

Prices for automatic petrol models have been held or reduced despite the improvements while manual versions have edged up just $500. Prices for the turbo-diesel variants, which also gain a diesel particulate filter, have risen between $1,000 and $2,000.

Toyota's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said couples or families with active lifestyles would appreciate the refreshed styling and expanded equipment levels.

"The updates to RAV4 cap off a sustained roll-out of new or refreshed Toyota vehicles in 2015 - a period of renewal that is delivering motorists more choice, quality and driving enjoyment while underpinning Toyota's sales growth into 2016," Mr Cramb said.


New RAV4 Cruiser Dash

Earlier this year, Toyota implemented a sweeping redesign of the locally built Camry, launched the highly anticipated eighth-generation HiLux and upgraded the hatch version of Australia's best-selling car, Corolla.

Toyota also expanded its market-leading SUV line-up with the seven-seat Fortuner and introduced improvements to the LandCruiser Prado and 200 Series, Aurion V6 sedan, Prius c and v hybrids, HiAce bus and van, and Coaster bus.

Exterior changes to the RAV4 include a bolder-looking front design with a larger lower grille and slimline LED projector headlights that incorporate high and low beams in a housing that also integrates LED daytime running lights. 

Restyled front and rear bumpers add 35mm to the RAV4's overall length while new wheel-arch mouldings and rocker panels sharpen the sides and contribute to a more flowing profile. LED taillights add a premium touch.

New wheel designs for mid-range GXL and high-grade Cruiser and a standard shark fin antenna on all grades further accent the freshened look of the RAV4.

The GXL moves up from a 17-inch alloy to a stylish 18-inch black alloy with bright machined spokes. Cruiser's new 18-inch alloys have five pairs of spokes while entry-level GX has a 17-inch steel wheel with low rolling resistance tyres.

Capping the exterior restyle are three additions to the colour palette: Deep Red mica metallic (replacing Wildfire), Hazel and Blue Gem.

RAV4's cabin is quieter for greater occupant comfort and ease of conversation due to expanded insulation coverage and thickness to reduce road, tyre and exhaust noise.

There is new matte black trim with contrasting silver accents. The centre console has been redesigned so the front cup holder can accommodate mugs with handles. A 12-volt accessory socket in the second row (in addition to two in the front) and a new holder for sunglasses have also been adopted.

GXL and Cruiser gain a new two-dial instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch colour TFT (thin-film-transistor) multi-information display. GXL is now fitted with an electro-chromatic rear-view mirror. RAV4 Cruiser's interior, including its leather-accented seats, can be specified in black, tan or beige depending on the exterior colour.

Ride comfort and driver involvement have been improved with measures including a more rigid rear body shell that contributes to greater driving stability and improved ride quality.

Shock absorbers and coil springs have been revised to give a flatter, more comfortable ride and to enhance straight-line stability.

RAV4's new cutting-edge safety technologies include Pre-Collision System with forward collision warning and automatic emergency brake, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

The newly developed features, standard on Cruiser and included in an optional technical pack for GXL with CVT or automatic transmissions, also includes Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and front parking sensors.

Pre-Collision Safety System can warn the driver of a possible crash and automatically apply the brakes. Automated braking can reduce vehicle speed by approximately 30km/h.

Active Cruise Control helps the driver keep a safe distance from the car in front. It also monitors vehicles merging into or out of the lane ahead to support smooth acceleration and deceleration.

Automatic High Beam (already standard on Cruiser) detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the taillights of preceding vehicles, switching automatically between high and low beam to avoid dazzling other drivers. More frequent use of high beam helps with earlier detection of pedestrians and obstacles.

Lane Departure Alert (already standard on Cruiser) is designed to help avoid collisions by warning the driver if the vehicle starts to deviate from the lane without the indicators having been engaged.

RAV4 is offered with three four-cylinder engines, starting with a 107kW 2.0-litre petrol for the two-wheel drive (2WD) variants.

All-wheel drive (AWD) versions can be specified with a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that develops 340Nm of torque, or a 2.5-litre petrol engine that develops 132kW.

The 2WD RAV4 is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox or Toyota's Multidrive S automatic transmission that also provides a sporty, sequential seven-speed mode.

Petrol AWD variants are fitted with a six-speed multi-mode sequential-shift automatic while diesel AWD RAV4 offers the choice of the six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes.

A feature of the range is Toyota's advanced all-wheel drive technology, Dynamic Torque Control AWD. It uses information from speed, steering-angle and yaw-rate sensors to control torque transfer between the front and rear wheels.

RAV4 first arrived in Australia in 1994, heralding a new era in the automotive world by paving the way for the popularity of sports utility vehicles - a segment that continues to grow.

Four generations of RAV4 have sold more than six million units around the world, including more than 248,000 in Australia.

V8 Legends Fire up Toyota 86 Racing Series

A trio of high-profile racing drivers bearing some of the most famous names in Australian motorsport has combined to give the Toyota 86 race car its official track debut.

Steven Johnson, Leanne Tander and Aaron Seton performed demonstration laps in three Toyota 86 race cars at the Sydney 500, held on the Olympic Park street circuit.

The 86 race car's public debut coincides with the announcement of Dunlop as the official tyre supplier to the Toyota 86 Racing Series, which will be contested at selected V8 Supercars rounds starting in May next year.

Dunlop's ultra-high performance R-specification Direzza DZII*86 tyre was selected after exhaustive on-track evaluation by four-time Australian rally champion Neal Bates and approved by the Confederation of Australian Motorsport.

The Toyota 86 Racing Series is a grassroots initiative designed to provide an entry point and training ground for up-and-coming drivers, offering a confirmed prize pool of $125,000.

Johnson, Tander and Seton took the wheel to demonstrate Toyota's plan for selected professional and other nominated drivers to compete alongside less experienced drivers aiming to advance their careers.

Toyota's nominated drivers will not be eligible for points or prizemoney; their primary role will be to engage with the broader field and provide advice ranging from race-craft and driving technique to team structure and focus.

Johnson, with close to 20 years' V8 Supercars experience, now manages the team founded by his famous father Dick. He is the kind of seasoned professional that can help mentor aspiring drivers taking their first steps in a national motorsport event.

Tander, married to three-time Bathurst 1000 winner Garth, is a versatile and highly credentialed racer with more than a decade's top-level open-wheel, production car and V8 Supercars experience.

Seton, son of V8 Supercars Hall of Fame inductee Glenn and grandson of 1965 Bathurst winner Barry, has made a big impression since making the progression from go karts to GT and production car competition over the past two years.

Dunlop Tyres Australia senior product and brand marketing manager Brad Fuller said the control tyre would cost $289.85 (including GST) with competitors allowed up to six new tyres per round.

"With an extensive history and legacy in motorsport, founded on performance and technology, Dunlop is proud to have been endorsed by Toyota as its partner in this exciting new racing category which is sure to thrill Australian motorsport crowds," Mr Fuller said.

The Toyota 86 Racing Series is scheduled to start in May (Winton) and will include rounds at Sydney Motorsport Park (August), Sandown (September), Bathurst (October) and Sydney Olympic Park (November).

The entry fee is $1,500 per round - the lowest for any mainstream national series.

This reflects the aim of the Toyota 86 Racing Series to be affordable for anyone with the passion and talent to compete.

The Toyota C-HR concept, a stylish and compact hybrid crossover, has been updated with the intention of launching a mass-market version in the not-so-distant future. The new five-door model is currently on display at the 2015 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show (September 15―27).

The Toyota C-HR Concept was created to explore new directions for compact crossovers in an increasingly homogenous marketplace, and made its first appearance at the 2014 Paris Motor Show as a design study.

The concept is visually distinctive, thanks to its expressive diamond-inspired styling, packed full of eye-catching details that have been sculpted and chamfered to represent the facetted surfaces of a precision-cut gemstone. The vehicle builds on two key elements of Toyota's design language―Keen Look and Under Priority―to create a bold, emphatic front profile that emphasizes the lower grille as well as increasing aerodynamic performance, cooling, and pedestrian safety.

The updated concept represents a step toward commercialization, with changes such as the shift from a three-door to a five-door format made from a practicality standpoint. Additionally, the roof color scheme has been changed from a two-tone (blue and black) to a uniform glossy black color scheme.

The Toyota C-HR Concept makes use of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), an integrated development program for vehicle platforms and powertrain components. TNGA will enable Toyota to create vehicles with improved chassis rigidity, handling stability, and comfort. Additionally, Toyota aims to give the concept an engine with thermal efficiency of over 40 percent, as well as further improving fuel efficiency by making the hybrid system―including the motor and battery―smaller and more lightweight.

Toyota hopes to show a production-ready model at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2016.

New Upgrade for Landcruiser 200

In line with other model revisions the Landcruiser 200 has undergone some major changes and is now availabe at Northpoint Toyota.  A bold new grille design headlines the LandCruiser’s design updates which also include new side mouldings, door handles, rear tailgate and LED lights. 

Upgrades include new safety equipment and revisions to the V8 petrol and diesel engines – the latter change bringing more power and Euro 5 compliance for the twin-turbo diesel, and improved fuel consumption figures for both.

Improvements to the 4.5-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel include new injectors, revised mapping and a new diesel particulate filter protected against off-roading damage by a special guard.

A revised cabin includes new padding on touch points, along with regrouped controls, additional storage, and a larger 9.0-inch display screen for high grades that also features a new instrument cluster home to a 4.2-inch TFT driver display.

Sahara  gets 4 Cameras

Toyota has released the ultimate "all-seeing" LandCruiser 200 Series - a top-of-the-line Sahara with innovative camera applications that make it easier than ever to perform manoeuvres from off-road driving to parking.

Drivers can now obtain a panoramic view around the Sahara using four cameras - front, rear and in the side mirrors - to provide added confidence with the placement of wheels, both when moving forward and reversing.

The front camera now rotates so that the horizon is always displayed as level on the enlarged in-car display to provide drivers with an intuitive understanding of the tilt angle of the vehicle.
An under-floor view, displaying images taken approximately 3m ahead of the vehicle, allows drivers to see an image that indicates where the front wheels are placed.
These clever features, particularly useful in tricky off-road situations, have been adopted as part of wide-ranging advances to the legendary LandCruiser 200 Series range that cover everything from styling to performance and safety.


LC200 Sahara Dash

As the premier model, Sahara adopts advanced safety features that include a pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, lane-departure alert, and blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.

These are in addition to standard safety features across the range that include seven airbags, vehicle stability and active traction control, multi-terrain anti-skid brakes, hill-start assist control, trailer sway control, an emergency brake signal and tilt/telescopic adjustments for the steering column.

Updates for LandCruiser's V8 engines - the 4.5-litre twin-turbo diesel and 4.6-litre petrol - bring improved fuel economy and Euro 5 emissions. 

Diesel power has increased by 5kW to 200kW due to new injectors and revised mapping while torque remains at 650Nm. Combined cycle fuel consumption also benefits, and is now just 9.5 litres/100km*, an improvement of 7.7 per cent. Along with the addition of a particulate filter, CO2 emissions have improved to 250 grams/litre*.

Economy and emissions for the 227kW, 439Nm petrol engine have improved to 13.4 litres/100km* and 309 grams/km*, gaining from the adoption of secondary air induction through the exhaust ports for faster catalyst warm-up from a cold start.

All models receive more modern and aggressive styling with a new grille, headlamps, bumper, bonnet and fenders at the front, and a restyled rear that includes LED tail lamps. Upgraded interiors for grades above GX include soft padding around the centre console in areas that come in direct contact with occupants' legs.

Two new colours, Copper Brown and Onyx Blue, are available on all grades except GX, bringing the total palette to 10 colours.

The LandCruiser 200 Series line-up remains diesel-only GX, followed by petrol or diesel GXL, VX and Sahara, all driven through an electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission.

GX is trimmed with grey fabric and GXL with grey or beige fabric while VX and Sahara offer the choice of black or beige for their leather-accented interiors. GX is a five-seater, diesel VX and Sahara have seven seats and all other grades offer eight seats.

Newly designed headlamps are halogen on GX, projector on GXL with LED low and halogen high beams with static auto-levelling; and dusk-sensing Bi-LED for VX and Sahara with dynamic auto-levelling. The two higher grades also feature LED front fog lamps.

As the entry model to the range, GX also gains a 12-volt accessory socket in addition to its 17-inch steel wheels and snorkel. Its use as a workhorse is reflected in features that include vertically hinged rear door and vinyl floor covering.

New GXL features include roof rails, LED low-beam headlamps with auto-levelling (static), LED clearance lamps, leather-accented steering wheel and gear-shift knob, a revised analogue instrument cluster and variable intermittent wipers (front and rear).

Other GXL features include 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone front climate-control air-conditioning, a rear cooler, rear spoiler, aluminium side steps, a second 12-volt connector and a 220-volt rear connector, horizontal-split tailgate, smart entry and start, reversing camera, satellite navigation#, privacy glass and body-coloured mirrors.

VX steps up with new features that include dusk-sensing bi-LED headlamps that incorporate dynamic auto-levelling. It gains side airbags for the outboard second-row seats as well as LED front fog lamps and daytime running lamps, newly designed Optitron instruments with a 4.2-inch colour multi-information display and a nine-inch touchscreen display (one inch bigger). 

Other standard VX features include leather-accented seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System - originally developed in Australia.

Other comfort and convenience items include front and rear parking sensors, power-retractable exterior mirrors, moon roof, black side steps and woodgrain-look interior highlights.

At the top of the range, Sahara - in addition to the new safety equipment and other features shared with the VX - gains a wireless smartphone charger and revised rear-seat entertainment with screens mounted on the back of the two front seats.

It is also uniquely equipped with a power tailgate, heated electric side mirrors, multi-terrain monitor, a cool box, heated front and second-row seats, ventilated front seats and active headrests. Its electrically adjustable steering column has three memory positions that also incorporate seat and mirror positions.

Upgraded LandCruiser 200 Series is priced from $76,500^ for the GX turbo-diesel. Price changes are below 2.6 per cent for petrol models and between 3.9 and 4.3 per cent for diesel.

Fortuner - A Modern, Capable "Aussie" SUV

Toyota's brand-new seven-seat Fortuner delivers SUV style and comfort with genuine off-road performance at value pricing from under $50,000* for the majority of buyers.

Fortuner has a strong Australian DNA with its unique body, wiring and key underpinnings having been designed or extensively developed and evaluated by local engineers.

The rugged frame, high-torque engine, all-coil suspension and strong upper body have been proven in Australia under the world's toughest conditions - on tarmac and off the beaten track.

In addition to its prodigious off-road ability, Fortuner delivers the compliant ride, interior space, convenient features and premium quality expected in a modern SUV.

Toyota's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said Fortuner is the largest single development program ever undertaken by the company's local engineers.

"If Fortuner could speak, it would have a strong Aussie accent as the most Australian car Toyota has ever imported to this country," Mr Cramb said.

"Fortuner is the turbo-diesel alternative to the similar-size petrol-only Kluger and offers an affordable choice for those who aspire to own a LandCruiser," he said.

"Fortuner is a chameleon, transforming seamlessly from a prestigious urban transporter to the most rugged of off-road explorers, ideal for any adventure. It's a Tardis too - spacious on the inside yet easy to manoeuvre through city traffic."

Buyers are offered three grades - GX, GXL and Crusade - all powered by a high-torque 2.8-litre four-cylinder common-rail direct-injection turbo-diesel engine with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

Maximum power is 130kW and peak torque is 450Nm for the automatic and 420Nm for the manual. Braked towing capacity is 3,000kg for the manual and 2,800kg# for the auto.

Fortuner uses just 7.8 litres/100km^ for the manual, providing a theoretical range of more than 1,000km from the 80-litre fuel tank. Fuel consumption with the auto is 8.6 litres/100km^.

The GX grade, which is expected to account for just over half of Fortuner's sales, has a starting price of $47,990* for the manual and just $2,000 more for the auto - both below the $50,000 threshold.

Fortuner's impressive list of standard features includes air-conditioning, rear differential lock, touch-screen audio display with Toyota Link** connected mobility, cruise control, side steps and 17-inch steel wheels with all-terrain tyres.

Toyota expects the maximum five-star safety rating as all variants are equipped with stability and active traction control, seven airbags, reversing camera, trailer sway control, hill-start assist control and rake-and-reach adjustments for the steering column. It includes three top-tether anchors and two ISOFIX child-seat mounts.

Mr Cramb said Fortuner's high level of standard features and value pricing would enable it to compete for the first time in a section of the market attracting around 1,400 diesel sales a month.

"Toyota expects to carve a solid chunk in that market, especially as the starting prices for several key competitors are well north of $50,000," he said.

Fortuner's seven seats are arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration. The 60/40 split-fold second-row seat has a one-touch slide and tumble feature while the 50/50 third-row seats are stowable.

Cargo capacity ranges from 200 litres to 1,080 litres when packed to the top of the seat backs.

Standard equipment also includes durable fabric seat-coverings with contrast stitching, projector-style headlamps, LED tail-lamps, an air-conditioned cool box, Bluetooth®## connectivity, six speakers, three 12V accessory sockets, audio and phone controls mounted on the steering wheel, eco and power drive modes and a multi-information display (MID) in the instrument cluster.

All-New Hilux: Tougher, More refined & More Aussie than ever


Toyota has released the toughest HiLux ever - a new-generation range that combines impressive global advances with extensive local development and evaluation designed to conquer the most severe operating conditions in Australia.

Almost every aspect of the eighth-generation HiLux has been strengthened, including a thicker frame, stiffer body, new high-torque turbo-diesel engines, advanced six-speed transmissions, beefed-up suspension and brakes, and expanded off-road ability.

Towing capacity is now up to 3.5 tonnes* and payloads are up to 1240kg" with 23 of new HiLux's 31 variants confirmed as genuine one-tonners, including all 4x2 variants and all 4x4 single and extra cabs.

At the same time, the latest HiLux offers SUV-like features including a more compliant ride, quieter cabins and higher levels of comfort and convenience with standard air-conditioning, touch-screen display audios, cruise control, more supportive seats and power-operated windows, mirrors and door locks.

New HiLux also has a distinctive Australian flavour with Toyota's local engineers undertaking an unprecedented six-year program that delivered a new rugged suspension package, enhanced underbody protection, and electronic control systems tuned for more effective operation on gravel and during off-road driving. 

More than one million kilometres of testing, including 650,000km in Australia, has confirmed the performance, reliability and durability of new HiLux over the widest possible on-road, off-road and climatic conditions.



A new family of high-torque turbo-diesel engines is headed by a 2.8-litre version with maximum torque of up to 450Nm - a gain of 25 per cent compared with the previous 3.0-litre engine. Its 2.4-litre sibling also generates higher torque of up to 400Nm.

Toyota anticipates the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating across the range with a reversing camera on all pick-ups (accessory camera available on cab-chassis models), seven airbags including driver's knee protection, vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes with brake assist, and trailer sway control.

A wide range of Toyota Genuine accessories - including many produced for the first time - have been developed in tandem with new HiLux, including airbag-compatible bull bars and an industry pack to meet the requirements of mining, construction and other industrial users.

Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the new range is the total package - the toughest, most comfortable and most Australian HiLux ever.

"Australia's favourite ute has taken the 'unbreakable' HiLux DNA to new heights due to Toyota's global expertise in developing tough trucks and the extensive involvement since 2009 of our local engineers," Mr Cramb said.

"As a result, new HiLux is remarkable for the way it inspires go-anywhere confidence, advances its role as a workhorse and is also fun to drive with SUV-like ride, handling, comfort and convenience," he said.

"It is ideally suited to Australian customers for whom towing is part of their life, carrying a load is vital for their job - and they love their bull bars, winches and other accessories."

Mr Cramb said value has improved markedly across the range with thousands of dollars of added specification plus new-generation advances that comprehensively outweigh price changes. 

The range starts with the 4x2 single cab-chassis at $20,990#. The inclusion of standard air-conditioning alone - previously a $2,051 option selected by the vast majority of buyers - more than accounts for the price difference.

Toyota's expanded HiLux range includes more double cabs, 4x4 and diesel choices plus the introduction of three 4x2 Hi-Rider variants with the ride-height and heavy-duty suspension of 4x4 vehicles. There are narrow and wide-body versions as well as single, double and extra cab styles - the latter now providing easy entry to second-row seats by incorporating rear-hinged access doors.

The range starts with Workmate and steps up to SR and SR5 grades, the latter offered with the option of a power-operated driver's seat and leather-accented seat and door trims on 4x4 diesel double cabs.

All four HiLux engines are now Euro 5 compliant - the quieter, cleaner and more fuel-efficient new turbo diesels, the revised 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol with uprated power, torque and fuel economy, and a more efficient 4.0-litre V6 petrol.

Compared with its predecessor, the turbocharger for the diesel engines is 30-per-cent smaller with 50-per-cent faster response. These engines, fitted with a low-friction timing chain, deliver 80 per cent of their maximum torque at just 1200rpm.

In a world first for a pick-up truck, HiLux SR5 turbo-diesels with the six-speed manual gearbox gain an "intelligent" function. Activated by pushing a button near the gear lever, it produces smoother shifts by more accurately matching engine speed to the transmission for smoother driving.

All automatic HiLux models are fitted with a new six-speed electronically controlled transmission that adopts artificial intelligence and other measures to support both improved performance and economy. The sequential shift mode features blipping downshifts.

The locally developed and tested suspension package is now standard for "tough" regions including Australia, South America, South Africa, the Middle East and Russia. Tuning and new components - including a thicker front stabiliser bar and larger diameter shock absorbers - enhance durability and provide better control of body roll and impact harshness.

Rear leaf springs - ideal for heavy-duty towing and load-carrying - are 100mm longer and mounted wider for SUV-style ride comfort while the attachment point of the rear suspension to the frame has been moved 100mm forward and 25mm lower.

Off-road capability is deeper than ever with rear-wheel articulation improved by up to 20 per cent, the fitment of a rear differential lock on 4x4 SR and SR5, and improved approach and departure angles on most pick-ups. Ground clearance is 279mm on 4x4 extra and double cabs.

The locally developed underbody protection is 40 per cent thicker and 30 per cent larger to provide three times greater resistance to deformation.

At the heart of all these improvements is the stronger frame, which features an increase in torsional rigidity of 20 per cent. Side rails and cross members are up to 30mm thicker.

The tub is stronger with a revised deck structure that incorporates extra ribbing and reinforcements, plus a reinforced header board, thicker outer panels and steel-plate brackets on tailgate struts.

HiLux's more rigid body makes greater use of high-tensile and galvanised steel while the upper body has 45 per cent more welds.

Finding the ideal driving position will be easier due to a higher hip point for easier access and better visibility, a greater range of seat-height adjustment and, on all but 4x2 single cabs, telescopic as well as tilt adjustment for the steering column.

Rear-seat occupants have more knee clearance, double cabs have a top-tether anchor and two ISOFIX child-restraint anchors, and SR and SR5 double cabs have a 60-40 split-fold rear seat base with central armrest.

All models have a 12-volt socket. SR5 variants have two 12V sockets and SR5 double cabs also gain a 220V accessory socket.

Wheel sizes start with bigger 16-inch steel, two 17-inch steel with all-terrain tyres, and 18-inch alloys. All models feature larger ventilated front disc brakes for improved stopping performance.

Fresh exterior styling reinforces the tough and refined image for HiLux with a pronounced bumper combined with sharp-look headlamps, which are LED on SR5. A higher quality interior includes a modern tablet-style touch screen and steering-wheel controls for phone and multimedia functions.

Workmate seats are now covered in hard-wearing fabric instead of vinyl. This grade features a 6.1-inch touch screen display and an audio system with Bluetooth®^ and two speakers, upgraded in SR double cab variants to a seven-inch touch screen display with Toyota Link** connected mobility. SR and SR5 variants have a new air-conditioned box capable of heating or cooling two 600ml bottles.

Top-of-the-line SR5 has digital audio, satellite navigation##, full colour 4.2" multi-information display, keyless smart entry and start, automatic air-conditioning, chrome door handles, premium steering wheel and shift knob, an alarm, auto-levelling LED headlamps, and silver interior highlights.

All Hi-Rider and 4x4 HiLux models are fitted with an under-bonnet fuse box to allow safe connection to the vehicle's power supply when multiple accessories are fitted.

An intensive five-year development program has resulted in more than 60 accessories being specifically developed for the new HiLux, including airbag-compatible bullbars that maintain the vehicle's expected five-star safety rating.

The pack includes new-comers to the Toyota Genuine catalogue such as LED work lamps, light bar, mining flag, wheel chocks, reflective stripes, wheel nut indicators, handbrake alert, various tray accessories and prewiring for an in-vehicle monitoring system.

Toyota has advanced the pioneering status of its iconic Prius hybrid car by revealing a fourth-generation model that debuts a futuristic design, fun-to-drive dynamics and an impressive gain to fuel economy.

A new, stiffer platform - the first developed under Toyota's New Generation Architecture (TNGA) program - is at the heart of revolutionary improvements that support a more responsive driving experience and enhanced occupant protection.

In keeping with the Prius name which means "front runner", the new-generation car continues to build on its eco-car DNA with technical breakthroughs including the world's most thermally efficient petrol engine at 40 per cent.

This remarkable achievement, which provides a significant improvement in fuel efficiency, is due to the adoption of new or substantially revised components that were effectively blueprinted to the finest limits and tolerances.

Engineers also succeeded with a comprehensive program of size and weight reductions for major hybrid components while maintaining overall performance, confirming Prius as the global pacesetter in hybrid technology.

The cutting-edge development program for the new Prius also focused on a more responsive drive experience achieved through a lower centre of gravity, newly developed double-wishbone rear suspension and a more rigid body.

Unveiled at a special event in Las Vegas ahead of its international motor-show debut in Frankfurt next week and an Australian launch early in 2016, the new Prius exterior has completely evolved.

It features a dramatic low-slung silhouette that is approximately 60mm longer, 15mm wider and 20mm lower, delivering a much more planted on-road presence with a lower centre of gravity and more space for occupants and their luggage.

Designers embraced Toyota's concept of "Iconic Human-tech" to blend flowing curves with aggressive cut edges, producing ground-breaking advances and aerodynamic innovations that display a sculptural quality.

The bonnet is lower and the most distinctive Prius cue - the roof peak - has been moved forward, creating an athletic shape inspired by a runner in the starting blocks. 

The sporty theme for the new Prius is accentuated by the Toyota emblem in the front grille sitting at exactly the same height as on Toyota's 86 sports car. It is flanked by new headlamps that minimise frontal area while providing a striking light display that helps define the vehicle's distinctive character.

Bold character lines run along the side from the front fenders - one just above the sill that sweeps up towards the rear fender, while the upper crease morphs into the rear spoiler, which has been lowered.

Striking rear combination lamps express the distinctive lines of the Prius from the rear spoiler to the trailing edges of the sides.

Exterior colours include an "Emotional Red", which utilises a newly developed treatment process to achieve a deep and vibrant lustre. 

The new Prius interior also embraces Toyota's concept of "Iconic Human-tech" with a strong presence that adopts advanced technology complemented by features that are functional, fun and have high visual impact.

Prius global chief engineer Kouji Toyoshima said nearly every aspect of Prius has been improved to create a car that will appeal to the senses in its own right, above its well-recognised green credentials.

A New Heart for Toyota Prado


All-new turbo-diesel engine, revised petrol V6 - both Euro 5 compliant 
 Efficient new six-speed auto, plus updates to safety and convenience 
Prado is Australia's best-selling large SUV 

Toyota has powered-up its market-leading LandCruiser Prado with higher levels of performance and driving enjoyment by introducing a new-generation turbo-diesel engine, improved petrol V6 and new six-speed automatic transmission.

The all-new high-torque 2.8-litre four-cylinder engine is 227cm3 smaller than the engine it replaces, yet it boosts output with up to 450Nm of torque while reducing fuel use and emissions.

Prado's V6 petrol engine has been upgraded to produce a further 5kW of power while also lowering emissions. Both engines are Euro 5 compliant with the diesel now being fitted with a particulate filter.

The two engines can be driven through a newly developed efficient six-speed automatic transmission with the first adoption in a Toyota vehicle of technology that monitors acceleration and other driving conditions to determine the most effective use of high-speed gears.

Other transmission technologies designed for optimum performance and economy include artificial-intelligence shift control to enhance engine braking and acceleration response. A six-speed manual gearbox is available with the diesel engine on the first two grades, GX and GXL.

The updates for Prado also introduce satellite navigation2 to the volume-selling GXL variants while the range-topping Kakadu gains rear cross-traffic alert3, which is designed to warn of approaching traffic when reversing from a parking space.

Prado has the distinction of being the first vehicle in Toyota's range to be powered by the company's latest turbo-diesel engine technology, which enhances smooth driving, brisk acceleration and cabin quietness.

The new turbo-diesel will also be offered with the eighth-generation HiLux and the new Fortuner SUV, both of which are due to arrive in local dealerships from October.

Designated 1GD-FTV, the common-rail diesel is the result of an intensive engineering focus on component design to ensure high combustion efficiency, minimal vibration and friction, and low weight.

Unique to the Prado version of this engine is a counter-balance shaft for added smoothness. A chain drive is used instead of a belt for greater reliability.

Maximum torque of 450Nm with the new six-speed auto represents a gain of 9.75 per cent over the previous diesel drivetrain with its five-speed shifter.

At the same time, fuel consumption and emissions have improved by around six per cent at just 8.0 litres/100km1 for the auto on the combined cycle.

Mating the new diesel engine to the proven six-speed manual transmission produces an even better 7.9 litres/100km1 - an improvement of 10.2 per cent.

The biggest fuel-economy gains with both transmissions will be noticed around town - 13 per cent for the manual and 8.5 per cent for the auto.

Prado's V6 petrol engine has also benefited from refinements that have extracted more power, peaking at 207kW, while lowering emissions by 1.8 per cent1 and achieving Euro 5 certification for the first time in Australia.

The 4.0-litre DOHC engine gains new injectors that improve the fuel flow and atomisation. Its exhaust system has been modified to improve gas flow and cylinder scavenging while the engine ECU has revised mapping.

The 1GR-FE engine with dual variable valve timing with intelligence - which controls phasing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimise torque and fuel efficiency - is paired with Prado's new six-speed automatic transmission.

Amid all the changes, Prado's line-up remains consistent: diesel-only GX is available with five or seven seats while seven-seat GXL, VX and Kakadu offer the choice of engines. The two higher grades are auto only.

The addition of satellite navigation to the popular GXL grade brings the convenience of this technology to the vast majority of Prado buyers. GXL - including the special-edition "Altitude" diesel based on this grade - accounts for more than three-quarters of all Prado sales. VX and Kakadu are already equipped with this feature.

The system adds a "navigate to destination" function for the GXL's Toyota Link4 connected mobility menu. It also brings three more speakers - a total of nine.

Prado's substantial updates arrive less than two years after the range was comprehensively freshened with bolder exterior styling, a more refined interior and even better handling.

Since the original Prado debuted in 1996, local sales have topped 237,000 to make it Australia's best-selling SUV over the past 19 years.

This year, Prado is again leading sales of large SUVs with 8,925 deliveries to the end of July, 829 ahead of stablemate Kluger in second place.

The updated Prado range starts at $52,9906 for the five-seat GX manual diesel. Automatic transmission adds $2,000 and diesel comes with a premium of just $1,000 over the equivalent petrol variant.

Price changes for the updated Prado range from less than 0.5 per cent to 2.6 per cent.

From January 1 this year, Toyota lopped between $2,730 and $7,630 from the recommended retail prices of the Prado range in advance of duty reductions flowing from the Australia-Japan free-trade agreement.

Landcruiser Extends its Reign


Toyota's LandCruiser 200 Series is set to gain styling, performance and safety advances when an updated range arrives in Australia during the second half of October.

The 4WD legend's two powerful V8 engines have been revised, resulting in more power for the twin-turbo diesel and achieving better fuel consumption and tighter Euro 5 emissions for both it and the petrol alternative.

Exterior sheet metal takes on a more modern and aggressive edge as part of the changes, while the interior has been revamped with soft-touch surfaces, revised instruments and controls and other refinements.

At the top of the LandCruiser 200 range, the Sahara expands its luxury reputation with air-conditioned seats and a package of advanced safety features including the ability to help prevent or reduce the severity of a collision.

The announcements for Toyota's "king off the road" are the latest in a series of comprehensive renewals within the company's 4WD range with an updated Prado due within weeks followed in October by the arrival of a new-generation HiLux and an all-new seven-seat SUV, Fortuner.

More than any other vehicle, LandCruiser has enabled Toyota to establish its foothold in the world's markets.

In Australia, it continues as the undisputed king of its segment with sales up more than 4.3 per cent this year and a share of better than 83 per cent.

With the latest updates, LandCruiser's improved 4.5-litre twin-turbo diesel engine gains new injectors, revised mapping and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) fitted with a guard to protect it over rough roads.

The changes have increased the power output of the common-rail diesel by 5kW or 2.5 per cent to 200kW while peak torque remains a thumping 650Nm.

Fuel economy and emissions improve by around eight per cent with combined-cycle consumption slipping into single figures at 9.5 litres/100km*, also bringing compliance with Euro 5 emissions regulations.

For the 4.6-litre petrol V8 engine, the air-injection system has been adapted to reduce emissions by inducing secondary air through the exhaust ports for faster catalyst warm-up from a cold start.



With variable valve timing on both the inlet and exhaust ports, the petrol engine maintains its peak outputs of 227kW and 439Nm.

Fuel economy has improved on all measures and the engine also achieves Euro 5 compatibility.

Substantial cosmetic changes are centred on a new front mask with a more modern design achieved by restyling the grille, headlamps, bumper, fenders and bonnet.

The new grille, with a hexagonal frame and triple horizontal bars, has a more aggressive and prominent look. This is accentuated by subtle scooping in the centre of the bonnet flanked by pronounced convex shapes that extend to the front of the vehicle. Its three-dimensional look is completed by headlamps and front corners of the vehicle that are set back from the grille.

Bars from the grille frame are integrated strongly with the new projector-style headlamps, giving them a thinner appearance that further accentuates the grille. The rearward placement of the headlights also affords them greater protection in off-road driving. The lower grille is wider, extending to the foglamp area which is also set back to help prevent damage.

Side protection mouldings and door handles have been revised while the rear makeover includes a new bumper, upper tailgate panel, combination lamps, reflectors and mudguards.

In keeping with the front design theme, the tailgate is now fitted with a more prominent panel between the restyled combination lamps. The wider licence-plate garnish extends into the lamps to emphasise width while unifying the rear design.

Two new colours, Copper Brown and Onyx Blue, are available on all grades except GX, bringing the total palette to 10 colours.

Inside, soft padding has been adopted for areas that directly contact occupants' limbs and support their bodies with special attention paid to the thickness of materials and the treatment of edges.

Switches and displays for audio, air-conditioning and driver-related functions have been consolidated into logical groupings while dials and switches have been reshaped to make them easier to use.

The centre cluster gains a storage area and a 12V outlet for all grades plus a wireless charger for Sahara. VX and Sahara grades adopt a newly designed Optitron instrument cluster with 4.2-inch thin-film transistor colour Multi Information Display. The two upper grades are also fitted with a new Electro Multi Vision and Navigation^ unit with a larger nine-inch display screen (was 8 inch) for improved visibility.

The LandCruiser line-up remains diesel-only GX, followed by petrol or diesel GXL, VX and Sahara, all driven through an electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission. GX is trimmed with grey fabric and GXL with grey or beige fabric while VX and Sahara offer the choice of black or beige for their leather-accented interiors. GX is a 5-seater, diesel VX and Sahara are 7-seater and all other grades have eight seats.

Range-topping Sahara's advanced safety features have been expanded to include a radar and front camera as well as other sensors used to detect and monitor other road users and lane markings.

A new Pre-Collision Safety System# can warn the driver of a possible collision and automatically apply the brakes. Lane Departure Alert# is designed to help avoid collisions by warning the driver if the vehicle is about to move unintentionally across lanes without using the turn signals.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control# has been fitted to help the driver keep a safe distance from the car in front. It also monitors vehicles merging into or out of the lane ahead to support smooth acceleration and deceleration.

Automatic High Beam# detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the taillights of preceding vehicles, switching automatically between high and low beam to avoid dazzling other drivers. More frequent use of high beam also helps with earlier detection of pedestrians and obstacles.

More details about the changes to LandCruiser 200 will be announced at launch timing in October.

World Premiere for 7 Seat Toyota  Fortuner


Toyota today staged the simultaneous global reveal of a new seven-seat family SUV that will arrive in its Australian dealer showrooms towards the end of October.

Known as Fortuner, the new SUV will expand Toyota's market-leading SUV line-up to six vehicles - joining RAV4, Kluger, FJ Cruiser, LandCruiser Prado and LandCruiser 200 Series.

Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the world premiere, staged simultaneously in Australia and Thailand, heralds a stylish and refined vehicle that is remarkably tough and offers genuine 4WD ability.

"Fortuner's strength and refinement ensures it is equally at home on the school run as on the toughest off-road trails found in Australia," Mr Cramb said.

"Fortuner shares the rugged underpinnings of the 'unbreakable' HiLux, allowing owners to travel to - and return from - places many other SUVs simply can't go.

"At the same time, Fortuner's unique design suits the advanced tastes of modern SUV buyers while being equipped with a comprehensive list of features appreciated by families and business owners.

"Fortuner provides a diesel alternative to the petrol-only Kluger range as the new entry point for customers looking to purchase a large Toyota diesel SUV."

Toyota sells more SUVs in Australia than any other brand, having delivered more than 50,000 in each of the past three years. No other company has sold 40,000 SUVs in a single year.

Fortuner will be offered in Australia in three grades - GX, GXL and Crusade - all powered by Toyota's new 2.8-litre direct-injection four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that develops up to 450Nm of torque^.

A new six-speed manual gearbox includes 'intelligent' technology on GXL and Crusade grades to ensure smoother shifting by matching engine speed to transmission speed. A newly developed six-speed automatic transmission is also available.

All variants are fitted with trailer sway control, which is designed to assist if a towed vehicle becomes unsettled by crosswinds, bumpy roads or sharp turns of the steering wheel. Maximum braked towing capacity will be three tonnes for the manual and 2.8 tonnes for the auto*.

A part-time 4x4 during day-to-day driving, owners can turn a dial to access Fortuner's impressive four-wheel-drive ability in high or low range.



The suspension package was developed and tuned by local engineers to meet Australia's harsh conditions, with double wishbones at the front and a five-link, coil-spring configuration at the rear for impressive handling stability and ride comfort on all surfaces. Front and rear stabiliser bars suppress body roll.

The vehicle's off-road prowess is enhanced by a rear differential lock with the componentry placed within the differential housing for greater off-road protection.

Significant local development was also applied to ensure optimum tuning of the stability and active traction control electronics for local conditions, particularly for use on gravel. Drivers can disable the electronics for specific off-road situations, such as driving in slippery mud or sand.

A reversing camera is standard across the range, as are seven airbags, hill-start assist control and an emergency stop signal. Toyota expects Fortuner to attract the top five-star safety rating.

All variants will feature front and rear air-conditioning, large touchscreen audio displays, Toyota Link connected mobility#, side steps, 17 or 18-inch wheels, disc brakes front and rear, and an air-conditioned compartment that helps keep drinks and food warm or cold.

The two higher grades are fitted with roof rails, fog lamps, reverse parking sensors, keyless smart entry and start, and downhill assist control.

At the top-of-the-range, features include bi-LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps, a power back door and 18-inch alloys with highway tyres.

Fortuner will come to Australia with a comprehensive and integrated range of Toyota Genuine accessories developed and rigorously tested locally.

"These accessories - including alloy and steel bull bars compatible with the vehicle's safety systems - build on the strong global platform and specifically meet the needs of Australian buyers," Mr Cramb said.

Toyota has trumped the bold new styling for its 2015 Camry with aggressive prices that have not been seen on Australia's best-selling mid-size car since last century.
Camry's latest upgrade is far more extensive than usual with a sweeping redesign from bumper to bumper and the arrival of a dynamic Australian-developed sports version produced exclusively for local customers.

New-look Camry is also available for the first time with a suite of potentially life-saving technologies, including a pre-collision safety system designed to help avoid an accident or reduce the severity of an impact*.

The scope of Camry's transformation extends emphatically to the bottom line with customers paying up to $5,000 less compared with the equivalent car in the superseded range.
Prices start at $26,490# for petrol variants, which is the cheapest launch price on an automatic Camry in at least 18 years - even though today's car is three generations newer and has significantly expanded safety, comfort and convenience features.Camry 2015
Even more aggressive is Toyota's value-focused drive-away strategy on all grades - adding just $2,500 to cover all on-road costs including dealer delivery and, where specified, optional paint (usually $450).

Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said designers and engineers had injected Camry with more passion and greater emotional appeal by crafting a more vibrant and compelling outline.

"This is the boldest-looking Camry yet - and even bolder is the commitment we have made to Australian car buyers by dialling up Camry's appeal and features while going 'back to the future' with last-century pricing," Mr Cramb said.

Camry Atara SL Hybrid interior"The price for today's petrol Camry Altise is just $90 more than its equivalent launched 18 years ago in 1997, the automatic Camry CSi - a vehicle without features that are now standard such as seven airbags, vehicle stability control, anti-skid brakes, a reversing camera and touch-screen audio display.

"Equally significant is that Camry is now available in two guises for drivers with distinctly different tastes: the well-known Camry that is more comfortable and capable than ever and a true sports version that brings to life the fundamental excitement of driving a car."

More than 800 parts in the updated Camry have been changed or re-engineered. Every exterior panel except the roof has been redesigned, creating a more expressive and athletic appearance with prominent character lines.

The hybrid model line-up has been expanded from two to three variants. Camry Altise, Atara S and Atara SL are available with 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol or hybrid petrol-electric drivetrains. Atara SX is a standalone sports model powered by the petrol engine.

The dynamic SX package, conceived and executed by Toyota's Australian-based engineers, elevates the car's handling to create the most agile and responsive Camry yet.

Immediately obvious are its brawny black five-spoke alloys - the first 18-inch wheels offered on a Camry in Australia - and wide low-profile tyres. A new sports suspension provides impressive body control and ride comfort simultaneously while a revised electric power steering system comes with a faster gear ratio for a more connected driving feel.

Camry's global chief engineer Masato Katsumata praised the work of the Australian engineers who developed the 18-inch sports package, which is also optional on Atara SL with silver-coloured wheels.

"It is amazing that this Aussie know-how makes Camry much more fun to drive - what we call 'waku-doki' - without affecting the ride comfort expected in a Camry," Mr Katsumata said. "This is a Camry that will be sought by people who want a true driver's car."

The decision to adopt more emotional styling and greater driving enjoyment confirms Toyota's commitment to Camry, which is now in its 22nd straight year as Australia's best-selling mid-size car.

Camry now exhibits a far more confident style with its aggressive-looking front bumper and grille, pronounced side character lines and low-profile headlamps and LED daytime running lamps.

Interiors are more refined than ever with freshened upholstery and new three-spoke steering wheels across the range. Revised instruments and an upgraded multi-information display on all hybrids and the petrol Atara SL incorporate two-dial Optitron meters separated by a full-colour 4.2-inch thin-film transistor multi-information display. The display's colour animation conveys a wide range of vehicle functions and coordinates with the multimedia system to display audio, navigation, warnings and communications.

While the standout achievement of the Australian engineering effort was the sports version, their input and evaluation played a vital role in ensuring every Camry is suited to local customer preferences and the rigours of Australian conditions.

Every Camry now exhibits smoother take-off, turning and deceleration on slippery roads and greater straight-line stability, particularly on rough roads, thanks to the decision by the local team to adopt a preload differential across the range.

Camry's five-star safety rating is supported by standard fitment of seven airbags, a reversing camera, vehicle stability and traction control, and anti-skid brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution.

For the first time, uniquely styled alloy wheels distinguish each grade - 10-spoke 16-inch rims for Altise, 10-spoke 17-inch for Atara S, 15-spoke 17-inch for Atara SL and the 18-inch wheels for Atara SX (optional on Atara SL).

Altise hybrid has keyless entry and ignition and auto dual-zone air-conditioning. From Atara S upwards, all variants adopt these features as well as a power-adjustable driver's seat, leather-accented steering wheel and two rear parking sensors. Toyota Link connected mobility apps^ will be expanded later this month to provide access to Pandora internet radio.

All Atara petrol grades employ paddle gear-shifters mounted on the steering wheel and dual exhausts. Atara SX's sporty nature is further highlighted by its sports mesh grille, rear lip spoiler, leather-accented sports seats and dark diffuser on the rear bumper.

In a first for Camry, Atara SL is equipped with radar sensors and a windscreen-mounted camera that are at the heart of advanced safety technologies: the pre-collision safety system, active cruise control, lane departure alert and rear cross traffic alert. Its other features that contribute to safety and convenience include automatic high beam, rain-sensing wipers and blind-spot monitor.

The range-topping variants also offer leather-accented power-adjustable front seats with a memory function, premium audio with a seven-inch screen, satellite navigation** and front clearance sensors. Petrol Atara SL has a rear-lip spoiler.

A tilt-and-slide moonroof is optional for Atara SX and SL. Two new exterior colours are offered, Indigo (deep blue) and Ocean Mist (pale blue).

Powerful and efficient powertrains start with the 2.5-litre petrol engine that develops 133kW mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Dual exhausts on petrol Atara models result in slightly higher output. Fuel use is just 7.8 litres/100km##.

Hybrid variants develop a maximum 151kW from the combination of the petrol engine, 105kW electric drive motor and electronic continuously variable transmission, sipping just 5.2 litres/100km## - a figure typical of a much smaller and less powerful car.

The upgraded Camry is covered by Toyota Service Advantage^^ with up to five standard scheduled services at $140 each during the first four years or 75,000km (whichever occurs first).

Updated Corolla hatch revealed ahead of local arrival later in 2015

A face-lift and general upgrade for Toyota's sales champ car in Australia is headed our way.

Toyota has previewed the 2015 Corolla hatch ahead of the car's public debut at the Geneva motor show next month.

The latest update of Australia's top-selling car brings redesigned front and rear fascias, with new headlights, a shark fin antenna as well as new alloy wheels.

It does appear, however, that both the new and outgoing Corollas will share sheet metal.

Toyota also says the new Corolla hatch will receive a cabin upgrade centred around improving comfort and safety features.

This could mean standard reversing camera across all models, bringing the Corolla hatch into line with the existing Corolla sedan.

The 2015 Corolla also promises improved fuel efficiency while retaining the 103kW 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine from the current model.

A new limited-edition model from Toyota introduces blacked-out wheels and styling details for more showroom appeal. 

Named the Corolla RZ, the new model is based on the Ascent Sport hatch and offers $2000 worth of extra value, for no more than $1000 above the price of the donor car, Toyota claims. 

In addition to the 16-inch alloy wheels, grille, bumpers, mirror caps and tailgate garnish – all Corolla RZ launchfinished in black – the Corolla RZ also comes as standard with satellite navigation and floor mats. Toyota is offering buyers the choice of six exterior colours for the Corolla RZ, including: Wildfire (red), Inferno (orange), Tidal Blue Crystal Pearl, Silver Pearl and Positano Bronze. The first three colours are matched with coordinating silver highlights, whereas the final three colours are combined with orange.

Buyers can specify the Corolla RZ with either the standard car's six-speed manual transmission or the continuously variable transmission (CVT), driven by the 1.8-litre 103kW four-cylinder engine. Priced at $22,290 for the manual or $24,540 for the CVT, the Corolla RZ is sold with Toyota Service Advantage, capping service costs at $130 each for up to six during the first three years or 60,000km, whichever comes first. 

The Corolla is currently leading the Mazda3 for the title of Australia's most popular car. For the year to date – to the end of October – the Corolla is ahead by 900 vehicles sold.

Toyota’s ground-breaking fuel cell FCV acquires a name and can run on garbage-derived hydrogen

Toyota president Akio Toyoda has just announced the official name for the company’s long-in-development hydrogen-powered car and it’s appropriately titled Mirai – the Japanese term for "future".

In a video released to coincide with today’s official launch of the new hydrogen-fuelled, Corolla-size four-door sedan, Mr Toyoda enthused that the car is available from December 2014 in Japan and will be followed in 2015 by other markets including the UK, then by the greater New York and Boston areas of the USA in 2016.

"Today, we are at a turning point in automotive history," he said of the 100kW vehicle. "A turning point where people will embrace a new, environmentally-friendly car that is a pleasure to drive. 

"A turning point where a four-door sedan can travel 300 miles [480km] on a single tank of hydrogen, can be refuelled in under five minutes and emit only water vapour."


The major hurdle to the widespread introduction of hydrogen vehicles is the refuelling infrastructure, something that Toyota is working to remedy in some markets, including the USA.

Toyota is working in collaboration with Air Liquide to establish 12 state-of-the-art hydrogen stations catering for the New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island regions in the US. This follows the company’s support for hydrogen infrastructure in California announced in May this year, in which Toyota is making a $7.3 million loan to FirstElement to help operate and maintain 19 hydrogen stations across the state.

Mirai Hybrid Fuel Cell CarMr Toyoda said the fuel cell powering the Mirai "creates enough electricity to power a house for about a week” while pointing out that hydrogen can be made from “virtually anything, even garbage."

He said the Mirai had passed "extensive" crash tests and survived "millions of miles on the test track and 10 years of testing on public roads in freezing cold and scorching heat during its development."

According to Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz, "Toyota’s vision of a hydrogen society is not just about building a great car, but ensuring accessible, reliable and convenient refuelling for our customers. I am happy to announce that this vision will expand beyond the borders of California and give customers the opportunity to join the fuel cell movement."

Mirai HybridThe Mirai will be followed by other fuel cell powered Toyotas in the next 10 years, according to from the company's Torrance California-(USA) based National Manager for Advanced Technology Vehicles, Craig Scott. His team is working on two new fuel cell vehicles on top of the Mirai, including a mid to large-size SUV that is targeting a fuel consumption of around 3.6L/100km.

Toyota claims a range of around 480km for the FCV. The FCV carries 5kg of compressed gaseous hydrogen in two carbon-fibre reinforced cylinders. Refueling takes up to five minutes — comparable to a petrol-powered car.

Toyota Australia has already made it clear the Mirai/FCV is not on the company’s Australian schedule and will not be until the "development of an appropriate hydrogen-refuelling infrastructure" said the company in a statement today.

Toyota Australia's product communications manager, Steve Coughlan previously told that "We're excited by the technology, but there are no plans to offer an H-FCV (Toyota's acronym for FHEVs) for sale in Australia at this time."

Toyota has released images of a stunning concept car that provides the first hint of a type of vehicle the company would like to bring to the small SUV market. The innovative Toyota C-HR concept, which will have its world premiere next week at the Paris Motor Show, presents a bold new dynamic design language.

The striking blue C-HR concept introduces an expressive new "diamond architecture" styling theme to the segment and features a hybrid powertrain.

Below its compact, sensual cabin profile, the lower bodywork has been sculpted to represent the faceted surfaces of a highly-durable, precision-cut gemstone.

The front view debuts new styling themes that hint at a future design direction for Toyota vehicles - a further development of the company's "under priority" and "keen look" design identity.

From the side, the highly-faceted lower body, aggressively angular rear shoulders and muscular wheel arches are contrasted with an exceptionally sleek cabin profile.

Highly-distinctive, aero-inspired, floating rear light clusters further enhance the broad shoulders of the concept car's lower bodywork.

Northpoint began business on April 17th 1984, at our current site on North East Road at Hillcrest.

The business was purchased from the Hassan family who operated as Motorama Toyota, having begun business as a Service Station and then a BMC Dealership


Initially, Northpoint Toyota was a partnership between Di and I and the Newton family of City Holden, where I was previously employed. In the early years decisions were made to stand alone from City Holden and thus Di and I became the sole owners of Northpoint Toyota, holding separate franchises for Toyota Passenger and Toyota Commercial vehicles.

Our business 30 years ago was very different from today. We began with 20 employees selling 20 new and 10 used vehicles per month from one location. Today we have 255 employees and sell approx. 220 new and 120 used vehicles per month across 17 locations, incorporating Parts and Service operations that are necessary for support. During the expansion we have acquired separate franchises for Hino, Ford and Kia, while at the same time developing a strong Fleet Management Department.

Northpoint has proven during these 30 years that the significant key to success is people. Firstly our customers who have given us the opportunity to offer to them our goods and services. And secondly our staff, particularly our current team who have looked after our customers.

Each of you can feel very proud of the contribution that you have made to the success of Northpoint over the 30 year journey.

Together with one of the most open and fragmented automotive markets in the world, and increased competitiveness, due to current and future Free Trade Agreements, it is not viable to continue building cars in Australia.The market and economic factors contributing to the decision include the unfavourable

Australian dollar that makes exports unviable, high costs of manufacturing and low economies of scale for vehicle production and the local supplier base.

We will continue to be involved in local communities and employ thousands of people both directly and indirectly via our extensive dealership network.

It is the company’s intention to import the Camry and Aurion vehicles beyond 2017, along with the entire range of Toyota passenger and commercial vehicles.

Over the next three to four years our goals, our objectives and our business model will largely remain unchanged.
